About the Presentation

A long debated association between preterm birth and previous induced abortion is now supported by a growing body of credible world-wide evidence.  The increased risk of preterm birth and other adverse subsequent pregnancy outcomes following induced abortion is both clinically relevant and important from a public health perspective.  Health care professionals should be informed of the potential risks of induced abortion on subsequent birth outcomes, and women considering abortion should be given this information as part of the process of obtaining informed consent.

  1. Describe public health concerns associated with preterm birth.
  2. Evaluate the relevance, for both clinical practice and informed consent, of current research showing increased risks of subsequent preterm birth following induced abortion.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 16061, for 1.0 contact hours.
