In this course the nurse/attendee will learn the about the past several decades of experimental research and epidemiological investigation that have yielded conclusive data showing a link between abortion, oral contraceptive use, and breast cancer. In this course we will examine:

  1. The biological mechanism by which abortion and oral contraceptive use leads to formation of precancerous and cancerous cells.
  2. The differences between retrospective and prospective studies and the data contained in each.
  3. How this data has come under attack.
  4. Materials that will guide the medical professional and layperson in consulting and education of patients and the general public about the link between oral contraceptives, abortion and breast cancer.

At the conclusion of this workshop, the attendee will be able to:

  1. Identify the hormonal mechanisms in normal breast development and the development of the breast in pregnancy.
  2. Describe the mechanisim of 3rd Trimester protective effect of breast tissue via placental lactogen.
  3. Discuss the discrepancies in the epidemiological papers relating abortion, oral contraception, and breast cancer.
