About the Presentation

In this course the nurse/attendee will learn to recognize signs and symptoms that clients may present with if they come from underdeveloped nations and how to work effectively with those clients. We will examine

  1. How early age marriage and childhood pregnancy, female circumcision practices, and past sexual abuse/trauma may affect a client’s childbirth with morbidity/mortality, marriage, delivery and reactions/behavior regarding ultrasound exams.
  2. Learn signs identifying possible human sex trafficking.
  3. Learn signs of post traumatic stress disorder.
  4. Learn ways to effectively serve these clients.

Objectives: 

  1. Identify how early age marriage and subsequent childhood pregnancy affects childbirth injury with increased morbitiy and mortality.
  2. Identify how female circumcision practices affect a woman's reaction to sexual activities within marriage, childbirth, and delivery.
  3. Understand three ways to ease the patient's anxiety during vaginal probe ultrasound exams after childhood or adult sexual abuse.
  4. Identify how past sexual abuse/trauma may affect patient's behavior/cooperation during a vaginal ultrasound.
  5. Identify three behaviors or typical reactions a client who has been trafficked might exhibit in the pregnancy help medical clinic.
  6. Recognize four characteristics of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from abuse or trafficking scenarios that a client may exhibit prior to a medical exam/vaginal ultrasound.

About the Presenter

Paula Grimsley, RNP, BSN is the CEO and President of Lady Care International, an organization offering limited health care, crisis counseling,  and education to women in developed or underserved nations. Working with Lady Care as well as USAF, she has extensive experience working as a women’s health care nurse practitioner in these nations.

3. Recognize 4 characteristics of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from abuse, or trafficking scenarios that a client may exhibit prior to a medical exam/vaginal ultrasound
    a. frightened
    b. sad
    c. anxious
    d. disconnected
    e. depressed
    f. feeling stuck with a constant sense of danger and painful memories that don't fade
